Re: Considering a career in radio? Veteran says "Don't"

It depends. If you think you're just going to sit in a studio and babysit a turntable, then don't.

But if you're an audio content creator who also knows web design and social media, do.

There are no discs to jockey any more. But there are lots of jobs in radio, if you know what you're doing.

Re: Radio Today and in the Past

Try to remember why we are in radio. It's not for ourselves, but for the audience. If you keep the focus on the listeners, you will find a way to be entertaining regardless of the constraints, regardless of the circumstances. If the focus is on yourself, you'll never be happy until you're the boss.

Re: Your Music Position...... "___ in a row!" Is it effectiv

BTW advertisers are given the chance to buy position in the cluster, but most don't. They know what they're buying.

Re: Your Music Position...... "___ in a row!" Is it effectiv

"Yeah, and I want to hear somebody honsetly tell me that they'd want THEIR business to be paying for the 7th spot in a 'break.' " Nobody buys just one spot. And the way spot rotation works is you might be the 7th once and the 1st another time. Also, if someone tunes in to the station during the spot...

Re: Your Music Position...... "___ in a row!" Is it effectiv

"Is the ____ (Insert your stations number here) in a row an effective marketing tool?" By phrasing it that way, it's a marketing department thing. Typically, they're the ones who come up with these ideas. Programmers then work with whatever number is decided. And no, programmers don't play "bad song...

Re: Your Music Position...... "___ in a row!" Is it effectiv

"And probably not coming back for the second of those not music breaks." If that was true, nobody would listen. But hundreds of millions do, so it's not. The commercial load really hasn't changed in 50 years. Station economies are built on it. You can do fewer commercials, but then you'd have to cut...

Re: 40 weeks is too long to play a "current"

Everybody adds and drops songs at their own pace. Large radio groups sometimes add songs early, as iHeart did with Jake Owen last week. They will stay with that song for the full run of the single, regardless of how long. If you want to get everyone to agree to do things the same way, it's not going...

Re: 40 weeks is too long to play a "current"

The problem is the labels are releasing next singles the minute the current peaks. Granger Smith just went #1, and the follow-up is already going for adds. That's too quick. Edison Research did a forum at CRS years ago, showing that country kills its young. By the time a song peaks, the audience is ...

Re: Radio Today and in the Past

It really depends on the format and the day part. There are some formats where jocks do interviews with celebrities and have lots of freedom to be creative. Lots of opportunities if you look for them and are willing to try some new things.

Re: The New "Direct Rock" Radio Format

The songs you consider "crap" are the ones that are getting the most plays on YouTube. So obviously a lot of people like them. Radio isn't in the music criticism business. If lots of people like crap, that's what they play. If lots of people agree with your taste in music, that's what they'll play. ...
