Re: The New "Direct Rock" Radio Format

Consider that some of the bands on that list have 3000 Facebook likes. Fall Out Boy has 7 million Facebook likes. That's a good place to start.

Re: The New "Direct Rock" Radio Format

Facebook is a worldwide medium. Radio is local. So you might have 400,000 likes around the world, and that could translate to about 100 people in Buffalo. You can't program a radio station to 100 people. The next question you ask is how many Facebook fans of one band are also Facebook fans of the ot...

Re: The New "Direct Rock" Radio Format

That's great, but they need to work a lot harder to achieve the kind of success U2 had. That means reaching consensus among all rock fans, so they're on everyone's lists. Most of them haven't done that yet.

Re: The New "Direct Rock" Radio Format

Everyone has their list of favorite songs. A list becomes a format when there's a consensus from a large enough group of people that you can sell that audience to advertisers. Someone has to pay for the radio station, and that's what the advertisers do. Otherwise it's just an iPod or a Pandora stati...

Re: The New "Direct Rock" Radio Format

When you say it's a "new radio format," what do you mean? What station is using it? Or is it simply a list of your own favorite songs?

Re: I Really Just Have Some Questions

Getting a job isn't winning an argument. So it doesn't matter if radio has changed or not. That's not going to get you a job. Typically, if someone has been out of radio a while, there's a reason. Has that reason changed? You're likely at a different point in your life now than when you were in radi...

Re: My Feelings on the Active Rock Industry

The active rock industry doesn't care about radio airplay. It's obviously not a priority. They don't sign artists with the thought of getting airplay. The bands don't court radio airplay. They don't understand the connection between airplay and the live show. Radio stations have lots of genre choice...

Depends on if the job was one you loved, or one you did just to get the free health insurance. I think he was referring to the latter.

Re: The Engineering Pool is Shrinking

Back about 25 years ago, I became aware of the growing number of former radio engineers who were offering outside engineering services to stations in place of their existing employee engineers. These outside service companies made a very good point that you don't need to be fully staffed all the tim...

Re: Larry Lujack is dead...

OKAY. Countryboy, so it's obvious you're not a Larry Lujak fan, big deal. You cannot simply write off a broadcasting legend because you think Disco Duck boy was more relevant You're wrong. I just never heard him on the radio, because I didn't grow up in the Midwest. I grew up in New York City. We h...
