FM, great points but a technicality.

FM originally gained traction because it was an alternative to AM top 40. The explosion in FM was due to album rock. Now that most stations are run as Top 40 of whatever format they are, perhaps the future of compelling HD programming is to be more experimental, more aggressive, or more musically unique, as the early days of FM were which led to people seeking out the band.

HD Radio is not a huge disaster, disaster yes, but huge? nope.

IBOC HD1 at the full 96kbs bitrate is not even close to an audible equivilant of the Main Analog Audio as of today. perceptual encoding and decoding. fails on the concept of "perceptual" audio. it may have specifications that equal or excede such as noise, seperation and bandwidth compared to analog but it is the perceptual coding results that fails upon actual listening. the "tone" is gone. harmonics and dynamic range are stripped out bit by bit. so selling the HD Radio concept as improved audio quality fails.

A quick look around the places you work and socialize would show that a large majority of the public would show that audio quality is not the priority of the majority.

IBOC HD-Radio does offer the capacity for an inproved listener experience through its data capabilities such as song tiltle, artiist, promotional and marketing. linkage to listeners and marketing can be developed to crate an interaction that would be of great value that can excede todays limited social network software offerings. to create a individual and more personal interaction. you can push this data out bit by bit to accumulate in an individuals device that becomes that users accumulated database or cache to reference a possible future interaction.

IBOC HD-Radio though the "power" increase allowed by the FCC in most but not all situations will be a benifit to the reception of IBOC FM for in the home and office enviroment it comes at a price to analog carrier modulation as it becomes noisy and misdiagnosed as a lack of signal when it is actually just a noiser one. fringe reception will be lost in areas that technically were not considered viable to the normal -dbu contours of coverage as granted in the FCC licensed coverage contour.

IBOC HD-Radio began as a tool without a job to do, Today we have a Job to do for listener-users and this is just the tool to do it with by multicasting the information out and user-listeners to use their connectivity to get back in.

Once again, the radio industry shows why it has earned the esteemed privilege of ranking below 900 #s and professional wrestling in the entertainment industry hierarchy.
