Doc: If I know that something (it doesn’t matter what) moves at 4 feet per second, how can I convert that into miles per hour? Sorry for the simple question, but I’m stumped. Thanks. - SJ

SJ: There is a very simple way to answer your question. I’ll direct you to the website called Wolfram Alpha and when you get there, enter this: 4 fps = mph in the search box.

So, click on this: Wolfram Alpha and type away.

Hint: you’ll see that 4 feet per second is 2.727 miles per hour.
4 feet per second
240 feet per minute
14,400 feet per hour

5280 feet in a mile
14400/5280 = 2.727 mph

Would not it be easier if the U.S. adopt the Metric System? - Anonymous

Anon: Hmm. Two responses for you . . .

1. How would the metric system change the calculation of speed other than stating it in a different metric? There is no correlation between your suggestion and the question and answer.

2. There have been a few attempts to change the U.S. to the metric system, but the citizens protested and the attempts were abandoned. The prevailing perception was, “Why fix something that’s not broken?”

Thanks for writing.
