Why even have jocks???

Just by listening I feel like the jocks (other than morning...somewhat) have no personality on the air. "That was __________ You're listening to ______________ now here's ________________"

I heard this sooooooooo much while I was in NYC.... What is going ON???? Would love to hear one of the jocks and get their opinion on this. I'm sure they're reading this because they aren't doing much stuff on the air.

Agreed... they don't really consider any "chat" as part of the programming clock. This would be why.

I have to admit I am not from New York but this is going on every where. So radio companies are living in the 80's & 90's when it was about the music. Then there are the stations taking money from the record companies to play their music. Of course don't forget the new thing to get people to listen less spots and more music. But what they don't realize for radio to survive it's no longer about the music. I mean with I-Pods and cars like ford where you can talk to your stereo and tell it to play Lady Gaga or Bon Jovi. We don't need radio for music. Now its about the entertainment and the information. Oh and when I say information I mean local. When I am in Cleveland I don't need some jock from LA telling me about a night club or restaurant I'll never get to go to. Radio stations need to just realize they are going to have to pay entertaining local people to talk to people and use the music as the cherry on top. I know radio can make good money and you don't need Howard Stern to do it.

It ain't easy coming up with entertaining things to say 5 hours a day, 5 days a week. Most of them run out of things to say pretty quickly. It helps having a co-host to banter with. Talking to yourself can be pretty strange. You end up talking about yourself. That's not very compelling. A lot of very entertaining people have quit radio because it's too much work. A lot of them are used to having writers come up with funny stuff for them to say. That's how Jimmy Falon does it. Look at the list of writers on his show some night. Writers have time to think and plan, while the host is busy being a celebrity.

Why have jocks? Branding. That seems trivial, but it's important. It gives your station an identity. Yes there are lots of places to get music. Other than the platform itself (Pandora, Spotify, Apple), they have no identity. You need people to provide identity. They don't need to say anything as long as they're there. If they say the wrong thing, as so many have, it can kill their career. It can make the station a target for demonstrations and nasty tweets. So it's best to say little and be thought a fool than to say a lot and remove all doubt. That's what my mom taught me, and it's very true when you're looking at an open mic.

The skill is to be able to promote station events and contests, pop culture bits about your audiences favorite celebs and even some lifestyle breaks but to do them quick, to the point, over the song intros to keep things moving and thus making everyone who uses your station, your target audience, happy. I know that I can say more and be more entertaining in 10 seconds than what I hear from others do in 30 seconds, in NYC they may be ultra safe, but they keep it moving and that's most important.

The hip hop jocks do more engaging breaks that take longer, their audience is more loyal than the mass appeal formats where you have 5 or 6 options, not just 2.

Welcome to PPM markets... Where "research shows listeners don't care what you have to say" and will change station if you say anything else, an excuse corporate wants you to believe so they can simplify breaks to the point you can't tell what's "live" and voice tracked.

So which is wrong? The PPM data or the research? Because from what I can see, both agree listeners tune out when talk is excessive.
